Gered Mankowitz
Gered Mankowitz is the son of the author Wolf Mankowitz and the psychotherapist Ann Mankowitz.
After attending several progressive schools in north London, he left his unfinished studies and spent a short but intense apprenticeship with the legendary photographer Tom Blau at Camera Press Ltd.
After two years as an assistant in various photographic fields, he started, in 1963, his first studio at Masons Yard, right in the heart of swinging London. Through his work with the folk-pop duo Chad & Jeremy, he became acquainted with and photographed Marianne Faithfull, whose manager was Andrew Loog Oldham, who also had the Rolling Stones in his stable.
Gered began working with the Stones in 1965. Toured with them in the United States the same year and produced several of their LP covers, such as “Out of Our Heads” and “Between the Buttons”. He worked with them regularly until 1967, when he was established as one of London’s leading rock photographers. He then worked with many of the leading stars of that time, to mention Jimi Hendrix.
