Mats Bäcker

Mats Bäcker (b. 1958) in Hagfors, is one of Sweden’s leading photographers in performing arts. Bäcker is known for his photographs of rock artists, most taken in the 1980s. He started capturing punk music in the ’70s, and has moved across some different genres and is today mainly working with opera and dance photography.

Bäcker works with both Swedish and international artists. He has portrayed Ulf Lundell, David Bowie, Tina Turner and 80s icon Grace Jones. He is best known for his image of Iggy Pop from 1977.

For 10 years, Bäcker was employed as a photographer at the Royal Opera in Stockholm. Today he works as an outdoor photographer, mainly with performing arts, but also with his own projects.
