Nicho Södling

Nicho Södling (b. 1966) in Stockholm, raised in Norrköping, and with roots in Ethiopia. He has been working for 10 years, in the same studio on Södermalm in Stockholm, where former artist Bror Hjorth and photographer Hans Gedda worked.

The vanity and fixation on one’s appearance was the first and strongest impression that struck the Swedish fashion photographer Nicho Södling when he made his first trip to Omodalen, in southwestern Ethiopia.

During his travels there, between 2003 – 2012, he visited and photographed six different tribes whose contact with the outside world was minimal. Despite the great cultural differences, he found one thing in common, the great interest in fashion.

The ‘Vanity of Man’ series focuses on the common human vanity that we all share on this planet and how it manifests itself in other places with different traditions and conditions.

A large part of the project is photographed against a white background and with analogue technology, ie negative film.
